About
sec-Butyl Chloride
sec-Butyl Chloride (2-chlorobutane, C4H9Cl) is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sharp, ethereal odor. It is the secondary isomer of butyl chloride, with the chlorine atom bonded to the second carbon of the butane chain rather than the terminal carbon as in n-Butyl Chloride.
Its principal industrial use is as a feedstock for organolithium reagents, most notably sec-butyllithium, which is produced by reacting the chloride with lithium metal. sec-Butyllithium functions as a strong base and as an initiator in anionic polymerization, including the manufacture of styrenic block copolymers.
sec-Butyl Chloride also serves as an alkylating agent and intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and specialty chemical products.
