About
Antimony Trichloride
Antimony trichloride is an inorganic compound with the formula SbCl3. In its anhydrous form it is a colorless to white, soft crystalline solid historically known as "butter of antimony." It is hygroscopic and deliquescent, hydrolyzes readily in water, and dissolves in hydrochloric acid, ethanol, and several organic solvents. The compound is a strong Lewis acid, which underlies much of its chemical behavior.
It functions as a Lewis-acid catalyst in organic synthesis and chlorination reactions and serves as an intermediate in the manufacture of other antimony compounds and antimony-based flame retardant systems. It has also been used as a mordant in textile dyeing, in metal surface treatment, and as an analytical reagent for the colorimetric determination of vitamin A. It is supplied commercially as the anhydrous solid and as acidic aqueous solutions.
